Questions and Answers for MDI Wheelers

What is MDI Wheelers?
The MDI Wheelers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit program aimed to provide experiences on the Carriage Roads in Acadia National Park for people who cannot ride a bike independently. The program has received Special Use approval from the Park.

What is the cost for a ride?
The rides are free.

Where do the rides start?
The rides start at the Eagle Lake Boat ramp, which is located on Route 233 in Bar Harbor. The duration of the ride is about 1 hour. The trike travels 5-8 miles per hour for a leisurely and smooth ride.

What kind of trike is used?
The program uses  special electric-assist tricycles that enable a safe and comfortable ride for people who would like to ride, but need assistance.

Who pedals the trike?
A trained ”Pilot” pedals the trike. Two trained “Safeties” ride alongside the trikes on their own bikes to ensure safe movement on the carriage trails. The rider wears a helmet provided by the MDI Wheelers. A comfortable safety harness fits all passengers. The trike has cushions on the seat and back to ensure a comfortable ride. Blankets and water bottles are provided as needed. All pilots and safeties are volunteers.

Weight Limit
The tricycle is only able to take passengers weighing 225 pounds or less.

How do you get on the trike?
A caregiver or family member is needed to help you get on the trike. MDI Wheeler volunteers will help with the safety harness and helmet that are provided for you.

Can family members ride along?
Family members are welcome to ride along on their own bikes. The group size is limited by the Park to 10 total people.
